First Date Questions; Where to Start?
I’ve had my fair share of dating experiences over the years, and if there’s one piece of advice I’d pass on, it’s this: ask about the things that truly matter to you. Why? Because those early conversations can reveal whether you’re on the same wavelength or heading in different directions.
For instance, very early on, I always like to ask, “What’s your ideal holiday?” If their answer is something like, “Laying on a beach for a week doing absolutely nothing,” I’m pretty much clocked out already. Don’t get me wrong, I love a sunny spot, but I’d rather be zip-lining through a forest. I’ll do the decent thing and follow up with a few more questions to see if other things that matter to me are on their radar, but deep down, I’m already considering if this is a match worth pursuing.
It’s not about needing to be clones of each other (in fact, it’s healthier if you’re not!), but as discussed in the my recent podcast ‘From matchmaking to marriage‘ I believe that a great relationship is built when two people share the same spirit.
Ice Breaker Questions for Dating
So, what if you’re not ready to dive deep just yet? No worries, let’s kick things off with a few ice breaker questions that can ease any first-date jitters and keep things light-hearted:
- What’s at the top of your bucket list? This can open up a conversation about dreams and adventures, from skydiving to learning to becoming a qualified photographer.

- How do you stay fit? This is a great one for dropping in a compliment! You clearly workout, what do you do to stay so fit? This can lead onto a deeper conversation about wellbeing if that’s important to you.
- What’s been your most memorable trip? A good one to see if your interests align
- How would your best friend describe you? This one generally leads into lots of nostalgic memories.

Whether you’re looking for a go-getter, a creative soul, or someone who balances work and play, these questions will help you understand what drives your date, and if your paths align!

- Tell me about a career highlight that meant something.

Life Questions
Life questions give you a glimpse into what really matters to your date, their past, dreams for the future, and everything in between. These thought-provoking questions dive into their memories, goals, and what makes them tick, helping you connect on a deeper level and see if your life stories align.
- If you could relive one day of your life, which one would it be? Perfect for hearing about their most cherished memories, whether it’s a family gathering, a crazy adventure, or a quiet moment that meant the world to them.
- What’s your most memorable childhood memory?
- What’s your hidden talent?
- What are you most proud about?
- Have you ever thought about retirement and how you’d like to spend it?
- Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Their Interests
Shared interests can turn a good date into a great one! These questions help uncover their passions, hobbies, and what truly excites them. Whether it’s books, podcasts, or how they spend a lazy Sunday, finding common ground (or something new to explore together) can create an instant spark.
- What’s a passion of yours that you could talk about for hours? I once brought up my love for a book I’d just finished, and before I knew it, we were deep into a discussion about our favourite development books. That kind of connection can feel magical, like a little spark of understanding between two people.
- Do you listen to any podcasts / follow anyone who inspires you?
- What’s your favourite thing to do on a rainy day?
- How do you spend most of your free time?
- If you could instantly master any skill or hobby, what would it be?
- What’s a dream experience or activity you’ve always wanted to try?
- Is there a movie, book, or song that perfectly sums up your personality?
And here’s one more piece of advice: don’t shy away from the serious stuff if it matters to you. I made the mistake once of waiting until the third date to ask about my date’s thoughts on children. When they made it clear that kids weren’t in their life plan, I knew we were on different pages, especially since my son is a big part of mine. I wished I’d asked sooner! Dating is as much about getting to know someone as it is about figuring out if they’re right for you.
